“Our efforts are making a big difference to the children of Papua New Guinea.
The impact of separate toilets for girls is unbelievable. The alternative is staying at home or going in the bushes, which is often unsafe. Now girls can stay in school and get an education. That's great!”

“I’m especially struck by the role of the children in the Mali programme.
They spread the education among other children and families and take their future in their own hands.”

UNICEF is active around the world improving water supplies and sanitation facilities in schools and communities and promoting safe hygiene practices.
In emergencies, we provide urgent relief to communities and nations threatened by disrupted water supplies and disease. Our programmes are designed to contribute to the Millennium Development Goal for water and sanitation: to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without access to safe water and basic sanitation.
